i looked said fungi up... yep. Omphalotus japonicus, commonly known as the tsukiyotake (月夜茸) exists and yep it is poisonous. consumption causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. the most common treatment is fluid therapy (giving IV fluids) and anti-nausea/vomiting meds. nope Kogoro isn't going to die but he's going to feel like crap for many hours! apparently the lil bugger GLOWS IN THE DARK! :o the gills under the cap glow with a whitish light and can be seen for upwards of 100' at night. if you find a patch you can even read a piece of paper with text 8mm tall easily! :o that's a bright mushroom! :o

ok sorry but... Shin is 17... no matter how 'mature' Conan talks... even RAN wouldn't mistake their two voices like that! this is a manga sourced arc too! Mr. Aoyama HAD to know that 10 years of growth INCLUDING puberty changes a boy's voice into one approaching manliness.

I think that voices over electronics can make your voice sound deeper than usual, though.

For instance, a family member of mine is 12 and his voice is starting to change. It isn't deep yet by any means, but when he talks on the phone, his voice sounds like a man.

But again, like you said, there's a difference in pitch from an 8-year-old to a nearly 18-year-old.

ahhh yeah! i forgot it was the audio on a video recorded via a phone. but... with distance all phone mics suck. they're only made to pick up relatively close sounds reliably. basically, any sound beyond one arm's distance turns into crappy barely intelligible background noise. but those guys were pretty close to the body when they were talking.

although now that i think about it again... perhaps it wasn't the tone or pitch Ran picked up on but the word choice, phrasing, and Conan's rhythm. we all know Conan goes into 'Shin Mode' nigh on constantly when he speaks freely about his deductions (and other stuff) around those he truly trusts and know the Conan/Shin secret, like Agasa and Ai and Heiji.

Conan even 'lets Shin out' all the time around Jodie and Camel and their boss James. they've seen his incredible mind at work alongside Shuu Akai in person during the 'Slumbering Kir' incident. by this time James and Jodie (i dunno if Camel thinks Akai created the whole idea or not) have also worked out that Conan created most of the plot getting Akai 'killed' and hiding Shuu as Subaru.

so this time 'Shin' came out with Heiji over the body and Conan didn't think about the phone's mic picking up their voices. this idea kinda makes sense if you add in Heiji's fast 'spin-doctoring' to Ran about how Conan copies Heiji's mannerisms.
